The murals of Piana degli Albanesi are the works that can be admired in Sheshi Urban Art, the open-air museum that winds through the streets of the Sheshi neighborhood, the first urban settlement of Piana degli Albanesi, dating back to the 15th century.
The Sheshi murals are the brilliant result of the vision and extensive work of the Bashkë association, which entrusted the artistic direction of this project to artist Andrea Buglisi.
A visit to the open-air museum offers visitors the opportunity to discover artworks integrated into a charming urban setting, as the stone houses emerge from the gray rock that characterizes the Sheshi neighborhood, an ancient Arbëresh place name dating back to the founding of Piana degli Albanesi and meaning "square."
The murals were all created in 2023 by artists who responded to the call of artistic director Andrea Buglisi, who also created a work titled "The Gift," a tribute to the Sicilian jewelry adopted by the traditional costume of Piana degli Albanesi and located in the Sheshi amphitheater square.
Angelo Crazyone created "Arbëresh Bukurìa," which, using his unique technique, is a contemporary tribute to the traditional costume of Piana degli Albanesi.
Saint George, the patron saint of Piana degli Albanesi, is the protagonist of the work by Igor Scalisi Palminteri, who titled his piece "Saint George, the Triumph of Light." It expresses the spirituality of the artist, a former Franciscan, and characterizes his works with a strong stylistic reference to Byzantine icons, which find a powerful identity in Piana degli Albanesi.
For his work "pensieri," Sardinian artist Mauro Patta chose the traditional costume worn on Good Friday, which has as its backdrop the rich gold embroidery from Byzantine rite vestments, which can be admired in the Museum of the College of Mary.
Fausto Guillermo Tabora Garcia and Simone Zanaglia are the authors of the work "memoria," which, in the vision of the artists who created it, is a call to reflect on one's roots.
Three more murals were created in the Sheshi neighborhood during the 2024 edition of Bashke in Art. Andrea Buglisi created a mural depicting the Albanian national hero Skanderbeg. Daniele Paternostro created the mural "Gjel," and Mirko Loste created the work "Gjegiëm." We look forward to seeing you at the open-air museum Sheshi Urban Art.
