This icon of the Madonna Odigitria is a high definition silk-screen reproduction of the original, from the Cretan school, painted by Hieromonk Ioannikios in the second half of the century. XVII. The icon was undoubtedly conceived to be placed in an important iconostasis due to its original dimensions which are 115 x 85 cm.
An impressive restoration work, carried out in the 1980s, allowed the removal of the layers of oils and resins and the repainting, bringing to light the splendor of the original colors.
It bears as an inscription "Eleousa" that is "Mother of Mercy" but it is in fact closer to the attitude of "Odigitria" that is "She who indicates the Way", and this is how this icon is recognized in Piana degli Albanesi.
