Monreale: the golden Cathedral
Located just a short distance from Piana degli Albanesi, nestled on the slopes of Mount Caputo, stands Monreale: an essential stop for anyone wishing to immerse themselves in the splendor of Sicilian art, and one of the most celebrated and visited destinations in the world.
Founded in the 12th century by the Norman King William II, the town is world-renowned for its famous Cathedral of Santa Maria Nuova, a masterpiece of Arab-Norman architecture designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inside, over 6,000 square meters of glittering gold-ground Byzantine mosaics depict sacred history, dominated by the imposing image of Christ Pantocrator in the central apse.
Beside the Cathedral opens the enchanting Benedictine Cloister: an oasis of peace framed by 228 finely carved twin columns, each adorned with capitals and mosaic inlays unique in the world.
Between the majestic viewpoint overlooking the Conca d'Oro, alleys filled with artisan workshops, and a rich cultural heritage, Monreale represents the perfect highlight for a journey of discovery around Piana degli Albanesi.
